Shipping container house: student dormitory on the water
Containers are common, but have you ever seen a container dormitory on the water? This floating dormitory designed by BIG is located in Copenhagen's port, in an underdeveloped area in the heart of the city, with a total construction area of 680 square meters.
As Denmark's student population continues to grow significantly and the city's expansion capacity is relatively limited, the design team rented a cargo ship in an underutilized area of Copenhagen's port and used containers on board to transport students. A floating shipping container dormitory was built.
The company rented a cargo ship and cleverly used containers on it to create a novel living space for students. This floating house not only provides students with a warm home, but also opens up new possibilities for the use of urban space.
The reuse of containers is not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective. By transforming these containers into living units, the design company created a living environment that is both practical and modern. The units are centered around a shared space in the center - a winter garden, which provides residents with a place to communicate and relax.
The dormitory consists of six groups of containers, each of which is divided into fifteen accommodation units. This design provides college students with a cost-effective, detachable and reconfigurable container living model.
On the top floor of the dormitory, one area is equipped with solar panels to achieve energy self-sufficiency, one area is laid with lawns for leisure use, and another area is reserved as an open leisure space for everyone to relax. Trees are planted in the central area of the ground floor, while the rest of the area is designed as a sunken activity area, providing a living experience similar to that of ordinary ground dormitories. Each accommodation unit is equipped with a kitchen, bedroom and living room. Compared with dormitories on land, students here can also enjoy the additional benefits of fishing and watching the sea and sky merge in the dormitory.
Modified shipping containers are not only economical, but also convenient to transport and quick to install. They can be used as coffee bars, private studios, container offices, container shops, container exhibition stands, etc.
